Our web development process and methodology
Most experts agree that the Internet really started to take off around 1994. So when we first started in 1996, there wasn’t a lot of history from which you could learn the right process. So like other leaders we gained a lot of skills the hard way. Today our customers benefit from the wealth of real-world experience we have acquired.
Here is how we meet with clients and create what they want and need from a website.
Consult
We strive to keep our meetings with you concise, goal oriented and on target. We know how valuable your time is and we respect that fact. We have two main goals during our first meeting: determining what features your site requires and what look is best to represent your company. We review your existing marketing material with you, look at some example sites and create a basic site map so we all know what information and features your site will have.
Create
Based on the initial fact finding meeting, our team meets internally to brain storm some ideas. We try to integrate all the features into the layout and give them maximum exposure based on importance. We create a paper mockup of the site and the graphics artist immediately goes to work creating an electronic mockup. We also formalize the site map in Microsoft Visio.
The mockup is a non-functional flat JPEG image that the customer can critique. The mockup is posted to the private section of our website where a web-based commenting and approval system can be used when many different parties are involved in the process. But in many cases, the review process is simpler and can be done over the phone. In that case web site is used just to store various revisions of the mockup and site map.
Code
Once the final approval has been received from the customer, we finesse the layout a bit more, crop the images and start coding. Some additional approval is needed for some of the more complex page templates. But most of the work involves taking a static mockup and making it a live working website.
In the last phase as part of quality control we have a 3rd party partner who reviews the website for any coding or language errors.
Connect
When the site is complete, we are ready to launch. Typically we enter the initial content consisting of text and images, but most sites include a content management system so the client can update the site at their leisure. The client is trained on using the website administration section before launch.
But more importantly, this is where we help you connect with potential customers by actively promoting your website. To learn more about Internet marketing, read this primer.
